Over 2,100 comments were posted to "Why Rural America Voted for Trump", Robert Leonard, New York Times, 2017-01-05.
One of my favorites was submitted by Cam Chapel Hill, NC
"I'm sick of the expression "hardworking". Who doesn't consider themselves "hardworking"? I suspect being homeless and unemployed requires a great deal of 'hard work'.
"Be all this as it may: voting for Trump is like trying to lose weight on a diet of ice cream and cookies-you may enjoy the experience but you won't reach your goals."
Other commenters pointed out that agri-business has reduced the number of family farms, that Trump's billionaires are only posturing about their wanting to help rural America, and that one relative was working 60-hour weeks in New York City.

Pollution hurts stock returns
"Higher pollution leads to worse returns for stock prices. Specifically, a usual (meaning greater than one standard deviation) increase in fine particulate matter (PM2.5) leads to an 11.9% reduction in the performance of the S&P 500 index. To be clear, this is not an 11.9% drop, but an 11.9% decline in relative returns."

Government workers aren't productive?? Try this job!
I haven't taken time to read all the stories about the East Coast blizzard, but there seem to be a lot about the various governments not being prepared. Do these critics want to pay the taxes necessary to have enough equipment and personnel ready to clear the snow?
The people who clear the snow work harder and longer than most of us would tolerate. I know it's hard enough to drive a bus for eight hours on dry roads; try running a snow plow with obstacles everywhere you look.
In the case of New York City, they assigned park employees who normally took down trees to drive plows on city streets. See "Obstacles at Every Turn for Plow Crew", New York Times, 2010-12-29.

A sensible discussion about education
Bob Herbert wrote a thoughtful op-ed about Deborah Kenny who has started three charter schools in Harlem, "Where the Bar Ought to Be", New York Times, 2010-02-22. She has achieved astounding results, but even more thoughtful are the highlighted comments. They get into the nitty-gritty of trying to educate students who come from a non-supportive environment.
It was a joy to read these comments. They had none of the mudslinging that makes reading comments a chore. I think the New York Times is to be lauded for making this selection.
I wanted to say more about the comments, but the New York Times seems to be overwhelmed by readers and I can't get pages to come up. I hope you have better luck.
