Gli italiani sono tornati (English speakers please read on)

For several weeks there has been a big spike in usage of this blog.  It was almost like clockwork every two days.  It was at the same time as a large number of visits "from" Italy.  And then it stopped.

Hurray, maybe the Italian/Russian reverse spammers had gone away.

Then today there was another spike.

You, my legitimate readers, can help make them go away by telling your friends and relatives about this blog.  If the ranking of visits to this blog goes way up, then the hopes of reverse spammers will go do away.  The reverse spammers hope I'll click on their links and ...

But I don't hold much hope about word about this blog spreading.  My comments to the New York Times and Washington Post don't get many "likes" either.

The Russians are back!

Me and my fat fingers!  I posted an entry on how the page views of this blog from Russia had gone to zero.  Now the Russians are back and the U.S. page views are down and far less than the Russian views.

I just can't believe that there are more Russians who are truly interested in what I post than Americans.

If you reside in the U.S. and like this blog, please tell your friends.  If you reside outside the U.S. and actually read this blog, I thank you for your interest and I hope I can keep your interest.  Maybe if the ranking of this blog goes up enough, the reverse spam will go down.

The strange behavior of Google search

The statistics for this blog include search words used to find an entry.  Every so often I follow up on these search words to see where Google had ranked my entries.

"why read is irregular"  had nearly 19 million hits and "Why read?" is at the top!

"toast anachronism" had about of 3.5 million hits and "French toast – an anachronism in a classic of French literature" is also at the top!

Has Google changed its algorithms to be give more personal results?  That is, do these show at the top because my name is in them?  Or did I really have blog entries that were more appropriate to the query?  I could believe this with a find of a couple of dozen, but not millions.

One better ranking of this blog

This morning when I was looking at the statistics for this blog, I was intrigued by the access through the search term "how to argue with a tea partier". I did a google search and my blog entry came up number 12 of about 6.78 million!! The entry is "You can't argue with Tea Party supporters" and is about an off-the-wall, missed the point response to my Local View about the Tea Party in the Duluth News Tribune last June.
