“Free marketers” laud the efficiency of corporations over the inefficiency of government. I think there is no difference between the forms. What it depends on is management. A good mayor or governor can get some great things done. A lousy CEO or low-level corporate manager can make a real mess of things, such a mess as to cause death or injury.
What follows are my notes in trying to navigate vanguard.com to find a report that I was told today was available.
Vanguard site navigation
You sent me email that I had a report for Vanguard High-Yield Corporate Fund Admiral Shares Report, but you provide no direct link to it. I finally reread the message and find that there is a link to Fund Reports.
I clicked on that but did not find Vanguard High-Yield Corporate Fund Admiral Shares listed!
Oh, there is a little drop-down box in the upper right corner that toggles between regular and admiral shares.
I toggle to admiral and then I get "Please wait". I waited! I went downstairs to get a snack! I came back! The "Please wait" box was still present. I did something or another and got a page that asked me to log in. But I already had a page up that had me logged in! I am using that page, without logging in again, to send this message.
Off to try to get back to where I was ten or fifteen minutes ago.
Comment in satisfaction form
Recd msg today, 2016-09-20 of fund report for High Yield Corp Admiral. No link given in msg. Finally found my way to page with list of reports. Latest report is 2016-07-xx!?!?
Also added in another part of satisfaction request: hire some good human interface people.
Follow up after signing off ins satisfaction.
Downloaded report, but Vanguard was unhappy with my Adobe Reader XI. Report would not open, damaged. Version is 11.0.17, undated. Finder gives date modified as 2016Aug 5. Checking for updates gives “Already up to date”.
End of notes.

How I nearly spoiled our Christmas
We sang in the early Christmas Eve service last night and had the soup and bread dinner between the services. The dinner almost didn't happen because nobody had been appointed to take charge of it. My wife did a lot of calling around and found many volunteers to bring food, serve it, and clean up afterward. She told me that she would help set up and then let others clean up.
Well, it didn't work out that way. After I ate and chatted with a few people, I put on my coat. The second service started and my wife was still in the kitchen. We also wound up bringing home the tablecloths to wash.
I was irritated; I still had presents to wrap and a few other things I wanted to do at home.
When we arrived home I made a few trips between the garage and house with things we wouldn't have had if we had left right after we ate. The last thing I brought in was the big bundle of tablecloths. My wife said I should just drop them down the laundry chute, but I said I would rather just take them downstairs.
This shouldn't be a problem. I frequently take heavy boxes of firewood to the basement. A box of tablecloths should be easy. This despite that my vision is blocked with either the firewood or the tablecloths.
I got to the last step and caught the heel of my boot. Forward I pitched. I think I dropped the tablecloths. My right knee slammed into the concrete floor and I rolled onto my back. Oh, great!
My knee was sore, but otherwise seemed OK. My pants weren't ripped, but there was a sheen that wasn't there before.
I picked myself up, put the tablecloths by the washing machine, and went back upstairs on my own power. But I was even more irritated for having to stay later at church than I had planned.
Well, I did get the presents wrapped, and I did get some of the other tasks done that I had planned. I also slept rather well, even if sugar plums weren't dancing in my head.
When I woke up this morning, my knee was not the color of a plum and I could walk OK. Whew! I won't be in the hospital with a broken knee cap or anything else. Bring on the presents! Raise our voices on high in song! Serve the punch! Merry Christmas!

Fair and balanced reporting?
Fox News posted a video clip entitled "'Occupy D.C.' Goons Push Elderly Woman Down the Stairs". But where in the video is she shown being deliberately or accidentally pushed? We only know two things for sure from this video.
1) There was a demonstration in front of an event.
2) A women fell at the bottom of a stairway and was distraught.
Did she trip? Was she bumped in the crush of a crowd? Because somebody was blaming the demonstrators for pushing the woman doesn't mean that they actually pushed her. And the use of "Goons" in the headline doesn't inspire confidence in this reporting being unbiased.
"Fair and Balanced" is still part of the Fox News logo, but is making charges without more substantiation "fair and balanced"?
For a more detailed analysis of the situation and the larger context, see http://www.coffeepartyusa.com/occupy-police.

Seeking healthcare around the world
Abigail Zuger, M.D., wrote an interesting review of "The Healing of America" by T. R. Reid. He had a chronic shoulder problem for which he sought medical advice around the world. The advice ranged from thousands of dollars for shoulder replacement in the U.S., outright refusal in Britain because it was not serious enough, and relief in India for $42.85 out of pocket per night.
The book is on order at the Duluth Public Library and already has four reserves.
